Peter McDonald was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1973. He graduated from the sculpture department at Central St Martins (1995) and the Postgraduate Painting Diploma course at the Royal Academy Schools (2000).

In 2008 he was the first prize winner of the John Moores Contemporary Painting Prize.

The following year he completed ‘Art for Everybody’, two 15 metre billboard images outside Southwark Underground station. The project was commissioned by Art on the Underground.

He undertook a year long residency exhibition, (‘Visitor’), at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, in Japan, during 2011-12.

Between April and June 2017 he was awarded the Abbey Fellowship in Painting at the British School in Rome.

He is currently represented by Kate MacGarry gallery in London and Gallery Side 2 in Tokyo.

He lives between London and Tokyo.
